An Extinction Rebellion activist who was arrested after scaling the Melbourne Arts Centre spire on Friday morning has been released without conviction.

Brad Homewood scaled the spire and unfurled a large banner reading "Occupy For Climate", in order to promote an upcoming round of sustained disruptive actions planned by Extinction Rebellion Victoria for the end of May.

In a video statement posted on the Extinction Rebellion VIC Facebook page, Homewood said "pretty much everything went to plan" and that "we're pretty happy" with how things went.

"I took a highly calculated risk to get a message out there. I didn't hurt anyone. I didn't damage anything."

Homewood spent most of Friday afternoon in police custody after refusing to sign bail.

"I saw a magistrate late [Friday] afternoon. Taking into account of time I spent in custody, I was discharged with no conviction. ... that's a good result."

Homewood mentioned that "not just anyone" would do that sort of an action, saying that he has a "lot of climbing experience with tree work and arboriculture" and that prior to the action, he "brushed up" on on his skills with some very experienced activists.

Homewood called on viewers to sign up for Occupy for Climate, taking place over May 25, 26 and 27.
