We were on the ground at Wombat State Forest with Victorian Forest Alliance and other community groups; who defied dracinian anti-forestry protest laws in Victoria, which recently came into effect, entering a 'Timber Harvesting Safety Zone' to conduct a mass forest survey. Close to 200 people attended.
Maximum penalties of $22,120 fines or 12 months jail apply for people who enter a Timber Harvesting Safety Zone without authorisation.
This is part of a coordinated day of action in the state's forests; including at Alberton West, Colquhoun, Powelltown and Toolangi. Surveyers recorded over 130 plant and fungi observations and found numerous endangered animal species; including Greater Gliders, Koalas, Tree Geebungs and the Leadbeater's possum. These observations allow logging exclusion zones to be established, which prevents habbitat destruction.
Images from the Wombat State Forest survey can be seen below. Many of these images were published in mainstream media reportage on the action, including in ABC News.
Matt's photography is absolutely first class. Matt has worked alongside the Victorian Forest Alliance (VFA) for quite some time now, and been a valuable contribution to any event he photographed. His work is highly skilled, professional, and always astonishingly fast with the turnaround. We are certain that the quality of his photos have boosted the VFA's reputation and media presence. So grateful to Matt for his work. Couldn't recommend him more highly.
Several elected representatives from the Greens also joined the action, including Ellen Sandell (Victorian Greens MP for Melbourne), Gabrielle de Vietri (Victorian Greens MP for Richmond), Tim Read (Victorian Greens MP for Brunswick) and Senator Janet Rice.
