Remembering the Srebrenica Genocide

We were hired by Children of Srebrenica, a Bosniak community organisation in Melbourne, to video its commemorative event marking the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide - an occasion marked each year on July 11. The theme of this year's event in Melbourne is 'Stories of Grief and Resilience'. This day honours the systematic murder of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys that began in July 1995 when the UN-declared "safe area" fell to Bosnian Serb forces. It remains the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II.

In keeping with the theme; the event saw several survivors, and descendants of survivors, retell their stories of what they faced during this period.

The event also saw community leaders address attendees - including His Excellency Mr Kemal Muftić, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Australia and New Zealand; and The Hon. Julian Hill MP, Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs, and Assistant Minister for International Education.

We filmed this event on a combination of camera bodies. The main proceedings and speeches were filmed in whole using the Sony a7 IV set on a tripod, with audio captured using a set of DJI lapel mics clipped on to the podium microphone. B roll footage was captured during the speeches using both an Osmo Action 6 and a Sony a99 II, with this later spliced into the final pieces of footage in post production.

The event was hosted at Kensington Town Hall.
