The fine people at Palestine Australia Relief and Action (PARA) were were able to get classical pianists Jayson Gillham and Iyad Sughayer to take time out from their national Keys to Life tour to perform a private show for Palestinian families - many of whom have arrived in Australia in the last few years and have been supported by PARA.
Gillham came to notability when, before a performance at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in 2024, he spoke of the 100 (at the time) Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza by Israel. This resulted in the MSO cancelling a later scheduled performance. Gillham than sued the MSO on the basis that he was discriminated against on the basis of political beliefs and activity. The courts ultimately ruled against Gillham, throwing out his case finding that his dismissal wasn't because of his comments on Gaza; but because the MSO was 'protecting its business interests and reputation'. Make that make sense.
Sughayer is a Jordanian-Palestinian classical pianist, with this event being his debut in Australia. Gillham and Sughayer are performing together as part of a national tour.
Like many others for PARA, we took photos as well as video of this event. The images and video footage being used to promote PARA's activities as well as for archival purposes. Images were also used for media publicity, with images of the performance published in The Guardian.
